- Dr. Ickpyo Hong has a broad background in health services research methodologies, with specialized expertise in patient reported outcomes (PRO) and rehabilitation outcomes measurement. Prior to his postdoctoral training, Dr. Hong was trained in psychometric methodologies, with specialized expertise in analyzing national and international surveys and research methods of modern measurement techniques (e.g., item response theory and Rasch analysis). Dr. Hong’s research focus and measurement interest are guided by his clinical practice caring for individuals with a variety of rehabilitative needs. Dr. Hong is experienced in equating similar activities of daily living (ADL) instruments including short-form creation methodologies. For instance, his research team developed the PROMIS self-efficacy item banks using various item response theory models, and currently the PROMIS item banks are widely used for research projects. In addition, Dr. Hong was trained in health services research with various administrative data and international survey databases. Dr. Hong is a Health Services Researcher who specializes in multivariable modeling methods required for observational data studies and in methods development for international disability comparisons in observational studies. Dr. Hong is well versed in both multivariable prediction models used in administrative data (e.g., Medicare data) and in complex models used to address selection bias using propensity scoring when analyzing observational data to answer a variety of healthcare questions. His research encompasses use of many types of nationally representative and population-based surveys (i.e., US, Korea, China, Japan, and Mexico national surveys) to examine disability comparisons with particular focus on rehabilitation outcome measures and comparative effectiveness. Dr. Hong also has significant research experience in stroke, physical activity, depression, childhood obesity, and other complex acute and chronic illnesses.
